With a strong security coverage, J&k sees the debut level of local elections today – a poll did controversial after the 2 main polling parties in the Valley, National Conference & Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP, removed out. With the federal government insistent on the election, voting is happening across 422 of the state’s 1,100 municipality wards. The list comprises 149 seats in the Valley, twenty-six in Ladakh, Jammu & Pirpanjal region.

Nearly 2,990 representatives are in the contest for the 4-phase election, that will finish on 16th October 2018. Voting has started at 7 am in the morning and will cease at 4 pm in the evening. Close to 240 contestants have been chosen without any opposition, most of them hail from the Kashmir valley. The Bhartiya Janata Party has told that it has had control over 7 municipal committees in Kashmir Valley as seventy-five of its nominees have been selected unopposed.

Following are the LIVE updates on Jammu & Kashmir civic body pollings:

  • After couple of hours of vote casting, the poll per cent in Bandipora was an abysmal 1% whereas Baramulla registered about 0.8% turnout, an official claimed.
  • Claims from Leh & Kargil towns of Ladakh region reports striking chill had voters away, though the process was anticipated to pick up as the day born and warmed up. Polling will close at 4 pm.
  • Election is scaling up in north Kashmir as over ten per cent of 4,700 voters had their votes casted in the initial 2 hours for Kupwara Municipal Committee, then by by 5.5% in Handwara town.
  • Nearly eighty-five thousand voters comprising 40,800 ladies are entitled to cast vote in the valley. Out of 30,074 voters in 3 wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, just 417 came up at heavily-fortified polling stations.
  • Less than 2% of the voters turned out to register their votes on Monday in eighty-three wards of panchayat local bodies in Kashmir valley in the debut two hours of polling for the 1st of the 4-phased elections in the valley in the stringent security arrangements.
  • For the first round, seventy-eight candidates have already been chosen unopposed out of which sixty-nine hail from the valley.
  • Before the first phase of urban local body elections that started in Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow, several voters in Srinagar are “hintless” over the exercise and the candidates they are ought to cast vote for. Many of them do not even aware when to vote.
  • People line up outside a election booth in Gorakh Nagar to exercise their votes in the 1st stage of urban local body polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Of the sum, one hundred & fifty polling stations have been posted in Kashmir division and sixty hundred and fifty in Jammu division. In Kashmir division alone, 138 election booths have been termed as hypersensitive whereas in Jammu division fifty-two polling stations have been represented as hypersensitive.
  • The pollings for the local bodies were last organized in the year 2005.
  • Voting started at 7 am in the morning for the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir urban body polls. Nearly 820 polling booths have been formed in three hundred and twenty one municipal wards for the elections.
